Creating a Personal Brand How Internet Marketing Can Change Your Life Often internet marketing involves creating a brand and then selling products through that brand. That brand will often be cold, detached, and alien to the users. A brand does not have to be a bland corporate brand! It doesn’t need to be faceless, either. In fact in today’s online world the most personal influencers that use soft selling effectively are making a ton of cash. If you don’t believe me look at forums like Reddit. If the community there even gets a hint that you might be blatantly marketing or trying to sell something without actually being there to provide anything valuable or entertaining or personable and you will just become the target of what I’d say is the equivalent an online lynching! If you want a hilarious example of this check out this video from a youtube influencer about “Woody Harrellson” Reddit AMA to see an example of what I am talking about. You don’t need to have a rad logo or to have some hipster sounding name. The option is to literally make yourself the brand. Your name and face are the brand. Personal branding is a solid and proven strategy for those that are comfortable sharing personal pictures, vlogs, blogs, and content related to themselves (and has made a lot of people a lot of money) and that’s looking to promote product(s) online and that doesn’t mind putting themselves out there. What does Personal Brand mean? Personal branding is making yourself the figurehead of your business in an ultra public manner. This can mean either that you are the business and you trade under your own name (it saves you money on trademarks at least! You don’t have to pay for a DBA!) or it just means that you’re featured front and center on your website and social media. On affiliatebulldog.com I sign my articles with my real name and I introduce myself on the front page but I am working on a new website to develop my own personal brand at terrellflautt.com – maybe by the time that you read this article, my personal homepage will be published and you can see an example of what my personal branding looks like. Another even better example of this would be the Smart Passive Income Blog where all who read the blog on a regular basis will recognize the author, Pat Flynn. The Four Hour Blog where Tim Ferriss is front and center is another example of a blog where personal branding is a huge part of it’s success. Advantages One advantage of a personal brand is that it can make you famous! It is sort of the side effect of creating an ultra successful personal brand so if you do not want to be famous then personal branding should probably not be your primary strategy! Yes, there are some people will see this more as a disadvantage but if you don’t mind people reconizing you and giving you special treatment from time to time then this is for you. For example if you have an instagram page dedicated to restaurant reviews and its heavily marketed with personal branding of your face then you might get your meal comped when you go out to eat at a nice restaurant because the owner or manager wants a good review! That is literally the definition of influence! Another advantage is that it lets people feel like they know you and it gives your brand your own flavor of unique personality. Your personality is one of the few things that only you have and nobody can take that from you. This means that when you interact with someone on Twitter, Reddit or Facebook, they’ll feel like they’re talking to an actual human being rather than just being the recipient of market speak. They thus become MUCH more likely to buy from you in future. With a personal brand your goal is to also to become an influencer. This is so that you can make additional income streams by getting paid by brands to create sponsored content. It’s not uncommon for an influencer on Instagram to get paid $1,000 or more for every 200,000 followers they have. If you have 1M followers, you could get paid $5,000 for making a post that takes literally five minutes. These rates vary widely from niche to niche and every amount of money involved in the sponsorship is always up for negotiation between the sponsor and the influencer. (I don’t want you to think that you can buy a million instagram subscribers that don’t care about your niche at all and start charging $5000 a post) The same influencer might only charge $5-$20 for a post depending on how much business they have going on, the negotiation process, the relationship with the sponsor, what the post involves (is it video or just a few lines of text and a hashtag?), and other factors. Getting paid $1000 for a 5 minute post doesnt seem like too shabby of an hourly rate, eh Bucko? They key to making that kind of money or more is that you need to have organic followers that are interacting with your page!
