A Quick Guide to Reverse Engineering Your Competitors for Social Media Success
By Terrell Flautt
The first time I realized how many competitors I had on social media, I almost fucking cried because I had done all this work but I had not done my due diligence. I had done searches on Google to see how many competing websites there were and was so happy to see that there were not as many competitors with websites on the first page of google than I thought there would be.
The problem is that I did not do simple searches on Twitter, YouTube, Instagram. If I had done that before launching my own brand then I would have learned that the reason I did not see a lot of .com websites was because most influencers in that niche were simply not using websites. They were using free social media marketing, instead!
This same thing might happen with you, or something similar so let me share my experiences with how I am able to compete with my online competitors in a brand new niche.
No matter what niche you’re in there are already others posting about it on social media.
You might have had this idea in your head that you all you need to do is publish viral content on places like Facebook, Twitter, Mix, Instagram and Pinterest for all loads of, free online traffic to start pouring into your page. The idea was that eventually, enough of that traffic would convert and you would start seeing cash deposits into your paypal account, right?
Now I hate to say things like this because I feel like it turns a lot of people off to trying to make money online but honestly, if this is all it takes to discourage you then you need to find another industry anyways because internet marketing is not all lollipops and prostitutes. Internet marketing is full of discouragement and disappointment– even if you are the best marketer in the world, you are going to be challenged, you are going to fail. The key is to track everything, learn from your mistakes, and to not give up. The reason that most internet marketers and wannabe millionaires fail is because they have the wrong mindset, they see a lot of competition and they give up.
Which is a real shame because the only way to fail in this game is to give up and quit. Let me explain to you why when you see other influencers making money online in your niche that it is actually a good thing. When you see influencers making money in your niche then you should feel inspired and motivated not depressed and angry.
The more competitors you have on social media, the happier you should be. Why? First of all, what is the first thing that tells you? What does it mean if there are a lot of people making money online in your niche? It should tell you that you are in the right niche. Far too often people try to go for products that have no competition and if there is no competition then there is usually a good reason for that. Meaning that if nobody is making money selling it then what makes you think you’re so special? I am sorry if I come across as harsh but there is a lot fantasy magic thinking that goes around in the business opp. niche and I am here to reality check anyone that was thinking that this is going to be easy.
The other reason that you should be happy that there are a lot of people selling products in your niche is because chances are, they are committing mistakes. Chances are, they are they aren’t subscribed to my weekly webcast designed for money motivated internet marketers and are probably leaving a lot of money on the table.
Your competition is committing errors. They are learning their lessons the hard way. They are going through an educational process that shapes their content strategy and the look and feel of their Facebook page. In other words, they’re doing your homework for you. They are performing all of the market experiments that you can capitalize on.
You are going to have competitors that have a massive budget compared to yours. Do not let this intimidate you. Instead, pay attention to the changes they they make on their pages. I can guarantee you that they are making these changes in reaction to the feedback they’re getting from their campaign statistics and you can benefit from all their trial and error ad spending by taking notes and implementing design choices into your own landing pages.
This is what I mean when I say your competitors are leaving money on the table for you because instead of you making those costly mistakes, let your competitors do it. Let them do your homework for you. This is how reverse engineering works. You just need to pay attention to their most successful content, take notes, find holes, ethically reproduce the content this time filling those holes and answering any questions that your competitors audience had the first time around.
How do you know what content to reverse engineer?
You can start by looking at the number of likes, shares, and comments. Shares (re-tweets) and post comments are the most valuable types of engagement because those are the metrics used to determine how “viral” a post is. The more likes, shares, and comments, the higher the likelihood that the particular piece of content you’re looking at from your competitor, gained traction with your target audience members.
Other popular influencers are showing you the kind of content you yourself should be publishing on your very own Instagram, YouTube, and social media platforms. This is the quickest way for you learn from your competitors, start to gain authority in your niche and replicate their success while avoiding their mistakes.
One thing that you have to always be mindful of as an internet marketer is time management. The process of reverse engineering your competitors posts and content can burn up a lot of time. Also, it’s easy for you to reverse any progress you make, unless you are very careful. If you don’t know what to look for, chances are, you will be creating a lot more problems than you would be solving.
